Transition to Weydon

Primary Transition from Year 6 to Year 7

We understand that moving from primary to secondary school is a big step, and we are here to make the transition as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Our goal is to help students feel welcome, make new friends, and settle into life at Weydon, where they’ll have access to exciting opportunities and a supportive learning environment.

How we support the transition

To help students and families prepare for this change, we work closely with primary schools and parents:

  • Primary School Visits: We visit our six partner primary schools in June to meet Year 6 students and their teachers.
  • Induction Days: Students spend two full days at Weydon in early July to get to know the school, meet teachers, and experience daily life here.
  • Welcome Meetings: We invite parents and students to attend a welcome meeting in May or June to answer any questions and introduce key staff.
  • Team Building Day: Once students start in September, they’ll take part in an off-site team-building day at Avon Tyrrell to help them bond with classmates and feel part of the Weydon community.
  • Ongoing Support: Our pastoral team continues to check in with students to ensure they feel happy and confident in their new environment.

Support for students with SEND

We recognize that the transition can be especially challenging for students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Support at secondary school is different from primary, and 1:1 support is rare. To help with this adjustment, we offer additional transition support, including:

  • Extra visits to Weydon for students who may need them.
  • Visits from our SEND team to primary schools.
  • ‘Getting to Know You’ sessions for selected students, arranged in collaboration with primary schools.

Mid-Year Transfers to Weydon

For students joining Weydon at other times of the year, we arrange a personalised transition process:

  • A meeting with the student and their family to discuss the move.
  • A tour of the school to help them get familiar with the environment.
  • A chance to meet the Progress and Achievement Leader for their year group.
If you have any questions, please contact Liz Crosby at admissions@weydonschool.surrey.sch.uk or call 01252 900550 (Option 2 for Admissions).
